Sometime in the early AM, the rain increased as the temperature dropped and tents began to collapse as a freezing rain weighted them down and tent pegs failed.

Unfortunately, a flash flood had eliminated the single road into the campground. The campground buildings, while locked, were our best option. We managed to break into one of the larger buildings and soon had a roaring fire going in the fireplace. The scouts warmed up and what could have been a disaster was avoided. I was an experienced camper, but this experience scared the hell out of me.

As I sat in the car, I waved to other neighbors doing the same thing with their cars. This routine was followed for many years in sub zero Chicago weather. Vehicles all over the neighborhood sat running in front of homes unattended, warming up so that the driver would not freeze his or her ass off upon leaving for work. We would stay in the car until the choke went off and the engine was running at normal idle. The engines of our cars never seemed any worse off for doing this.

I would think that if you have started your car and cleared the windows, it would make sense to do a slow rolling warm up simply to avoid wasting money on gasoline as the car idles. Years ago the car’s automatic choke might have gotten stuck and caused dilution of the oil as the car sat idling. today our cars are computer controlled, including the fuel system.
